Founder Of Diabetes CORE Florene Linnen Has Passed Away
Florene Linnen, a tireless champion for Georgetown County, passed away unexpectedly Sunday night. For over five decades, she dedicated her life to bettering her community, embodying the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s belief that human progress comes through the “tireless efforts” of those willing to serve.
Mrs. Linnen was a foundational figure in the Dunbar-Choppee-Browns Ferry community. She became best known as a powerful advocate for diabetes prevention throughout Georgetown County and South Carolina. My own encounter with her came in 2010 while writing my book, *Ebony Effects*. Seeking to feature accomplished local women, Florene Linnen’s name consistently rose to the top of every list.

I was fortunate to find she was a living legend I could interview. We spoke at length about diabetes’ devastating impact, particularly within the Black community. Florene was a drum major for this cause, educating countless individuals through health fairs, workshops, and schools. Her legacy is cemented in the Community Outreach Resource and Education (C.O.R.E.) group she founded, a vital resource supporting those in rural South Carolina. Her passing leaves a profound void, but her immense impact endures.
