Monroe Community College (MCC) mourns the passing of its third and longest-serving president, Dr. Peter A. Spina. Leading the college from 1982 to 1999, his transformative vision established MCC as a national leader in community college education.
President Emeritus Spina’s legacy is marked by monumental achievements that reshaped the institution. He spearheaded record enrollment growth, significantly increasing diversity. His tenure saw the creation of the MCC Foundation, the launch of innovative 2+2 degree programs, and the openings of the Damon City Campus, the Applied Technologies Center, and the Guon Child Care Center.

His influence extended beyond campus, earning MCC induction into the prestigious League for Innovation, where he served as Chairman. Recognized as a top transformational leader, he received numerous accolades, including the ACCT Thomas Peters Leadership Award.
In 2007, the Board of Trustees honored his exceptional career by renaming Building 1 the Peter A. Spina Administration Building.
At his request, no formal service will be held. Contributions in his memory can be made to the MCC Foundation. Dr. Spina’s profound contributions and enduring legacy live on through the college’s values, programs, and the countless lives he touched.
